Why doesn't the system accept my new password?

This article explains why you may encounter the message "You need to choose a different password because parts of your new password contain a commonly used password" when attempting to change your password.

This support article deals with passwords and the fine line between "convenience" and security. We are strict in assessing which passwords are accepted by the system when changing passwords, and we are aware that our current system places high demands on the new password. The advantage is that the passwords users create are very secure.

An error message you may receive when you try to change your password is You need to choose a different password as your new password contains a commonly used password.

By "...contains a commonly used password" we mean that one or more specific parts of the new password includes a common password.

Example:

1234 is an example of a commonly used password.

If a user tries to use jG3u!FD-1234-fqr*yKm as a password, it may seem secure and good at first glance. The password is longer than 8 characters, contains both upper and lower case letters as well as special characters, BUT it also includes "a commonly used password" in the form of 1234.

In this example, the user can simply remove 1234 and only use the password jG3u!FD--fqr*yKm, which the system will accept.

We cannot provide an exhaustive list of all commonly used passwords, but here are a few examples to give you an idea of the passwords that are frequently encountered:
  • qwerty
  • password
  • 123qwe
  • abc123
  • 1q2w3e
  • 123321
  • 000000
  • password123
  • aa12345678
  • 2023
